Mrs. deWinter never tells us her own first name in the whole of Rebecca, and this earring keeps a similar kind of reserve. Where its green and red sibling is all jewel-box color, this one goes quiet: the same small gold bee, the same oval lapis stone at its center, set instead against a round of black enamel, trimmed in a few points of pearl.
