CHAPTER ONE
The Four Houses
The garden is divided into four houses, each keeping a different kind of secret. Choose the one that has been calling you.
THE HAND BEHIND THE GARDEN
Everything here was a wet page first.
I paint botanicals in watercolour — real ones, at first, and then they start wandering off into shapes that don't exist in any field guide. Cyahi is what happens when I try to make those wanderings hold still long enough to be worn.

The Page
Pigment, water, and about four minutes before the paper decides what it wants. Nothing is sketched twice.

The Translation
The painting is redrawn as line, then carved in wax — the hardest part is keeping the accident that made the painting good.

The Object
Cast in recycled brass and gold vermeil, finished by hand in small runs. Each piece arrives with the painting it came from.
