In Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince, a swallow delays his flight south again and again for love of a statue, stripping him of gold leaf and sapphire eyes to give to the poor, staying through the cold long after every other bird has gone. This pendant catches him mid-flight instead, wings lifted, perched just above a small carved blossom on a branch, gold on gold, unhurried.
It is delicate rather than dramatic, close to the collarbone on a fine copper chain, weighing about five grams. The kind of piece that reads as vintage the first time you wear it, the sort of pendant that might have belonged to somebody's grandmother, in the best way.
