Hester Prynne's daughter in The Scarlet Letter is named, simply, Pearl, a small bright thing that grew out of scandal and refused to apologize for existing. This earring picks up the thread left by the Hester Bloom Stud and lets it grow: the same deep red flower at the top, ruffled and glossy, a tiny second bud opening beside it on a stem of olive-green enamel leaves, and at the very end, hanging free, one real pearl.
At 6.3 cm it has real presence without much weight, under 14 grams, and it moves the way a growing thing moves rather than a fixed one. Wear the two together, Hester at one ear and Pearl at the other, or wear this one alone and let the story stand on its own.
Either way, something has clearly bloomed.
